Jordan Wildman had a game-high 14 points, Peyton Bledsoe scored 11 and Silas Bauer added 10 to help Loogootee (7-1, 2-0 in BCC) to a 46-32 win over Rushville in the opening round game of the ONB Holiday Classic at North Daviess. The Lions labored their way to an 8-7 lead after one, and held an 18-10 advantage midway through the second, but Rushville rallied for 8 straight points to tie the game at 18-18, before LHS eventually grabbed a 21-18 halftime lead. Loogootee would outscore their Lion counterpart 8-6 in the third for a 29-24 lead after three. In the game’s final period Ryan Haywood’s offense finally came alive for 17 points as LHS slowly built its lead to double figures. The Class A, #7 ranked Lions would go on to defeat Rushville (2-5, 1-2 in EIC) 46-32, earning themselves a date with North Daviess in the semifinal round of the tournament.
Despite meeting for the first time ever, both teams share more in common than just a nickname. In fact, Loogootee and Rushville were on a collision course to meet up at the State Finals in 1975, but Rushville came up short to Columbus North 62-43 in the championship game of the semi-state. A week later, Loogootee would defeat that same Columbus North team 50-27 in the Final Four, before losing to Marion in the championship game of the state. Ironically, the very next year, Rushville made it to the state championship, but like Loogootee, they too would fall to the mighty Giants of Marion by a final of 82-76.
